chelsea flower show part two

the inside of the grand pavilion and the en masse presentation knocked my socks off. it was a strange mix of granny and modern, some of the stands could have come straight from the 1970's. being the last day of the show too everything was at that wonderful just overblown stage, with the vague smell in the air of flowers on the turn and petals starting to curl and drop. i loved it.

but the irises...man, the irises...

chelsea flower show and london japes

i was in london at the weekend, for a few days which consisted of lots of flowers and horticulture, good food, great company (there may even have been a little prosecco but shhhh...)

first up, chelsea flower show was an absolute delight. foxgloves were everywhere, and i do love a foxglove or two. the planting and design was very wild, less manicured than previous years and very much influenced by vegetable gardening. so far, so good.

my favourite gardens were actually the artisan ones, which were nearer the back of the site. they looked like they were from a different era, almost feudal. gorgeous.

i managed to catch a demo in the 'talking flowers' area by the utterly charming simon lycett (the four weddings and a funeral floral supremo). my favourite quote from the weekend was his view on colour and the naysayers who insist that there are some combinations that should be steered away from:

"i have yet to find any colours that don't work well together as long as you do it with enough conviction"

you're damn right there, son.

i've been hankering after a pair of felco's for a while now. but which size? rotating? or not? the felco stand had the whole array with twigs and stems to practice on. perfect. it turns out i was a 12 after all.

it seems all the fancy americans use bonsai-type clippers for their flowers so like the lemming i can sometimes be i thought maybe i should get down with these too, until i found a wonderful japanese company at chelsea who sold me these badboy scissors which could be the best ever and camellia oil which will keep them all clean and perfect. in your face grotty cheap plastic yellow handled scissors, i hope we never have to meet again.

the shops around sloan street did their annual chelsea homage but the best by far was the jo malone store with their cherry blossom 'tree' actually escaping through the front of the glass window. wonderful.

the remainder of the weekend was spent eating amazing tapas in exmouth market, visiting columbia road flower market and drinking late into the night in dalston/london fields with the beautiful people.

london you still have my heart.

lotte and bloom in elle decoration

last month elle decoration got in touch. they were writing a piece on how to use flowers in the home and they asked me to contribute. the july issue came out at the weekend and i'm absolutely delighted to have made the cut (it's even a cover story!) as it's one of my all-time favourite magazines. there's also some great advice and ideas from other florists in there too...

severe weather warning

the weather here is crazy today.

trees are falling down in the wind, cars are swerving. there was a dinghy blowing down our street. a dinghy! i kid you not.

this morning i had to breakdown and collect up from a wedding, carrying tall tall vases and large heavy urns through torrential rain and wind. i like a challenge. the guys at the venue couldn't believe i'd been sent on my own to collect everything up. don't you get anyone to help you? they said. nah, the boss is a bitch i said.

tally ho!

getting a little cheeky post in before i head into the flower vortex tomorrow and won't be seen again for about 48 hours. today has been a painting plinths kind of day along with a bit of radio 4 and a major workroom clear out.

i've been keeping the peonies on a short leash and they are pretty bang on perfect. the rest of the booty arrives tomorrow. am enjoying a little calm tonight before the proverbial hits the fan in the morning.
